As the Royal Air Force marks its centenary year, this talk will look at the formation of the world’s first independent air force. It will explore the circumstances which led to the merger of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service on 1 April 1918 to create the new organisation. A consideration will be made of the personalities and drama involved in the process and the impact on those who served. An overview of the activities and achievements of the RAF during the First World War will be undertaken and a reflection on some ‘Cambridge Connections’ with the RAF’s history will be given.

Nina Hadaway is the Archive, Library and Research Manager at the Royal Air Force Museum. A published author, she has previously spoken at several conferences and presented to a number of societies on various aspects of RAF history.
