Speaker: Prof. Keith Hayward, RAeS Head of Research

Location: Lecture Theatre ‘0’, Cambridge University Engineering Department, Trumpington Street, Cambridge CB2 1PZ.

Lecture Synopsis
Professor Keith Hayward will speak on where we are and where we are going with technology in both civil and military applications, some of the regulatory and ethical issues, and the implications for the traditional aerospace industry.

THE WW1 ZEPPELIN RAIDS

BRANCH VISIT TO LONDON – WEDNESDAY 10th SEPTEMBER 2014

As a prelude to our Zeppelin lecture on 13th November there will be a Branch visit to London on 10th September. This will include a two-hour coach tour with a specialist Blue Badge Guide tracing the routes the Zeppelins took over Central London. After lunch in a London pub the afternoon will be spent at the newly-opened World War I galleries at the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth.

“The Airlander Project”

Speaker: David Stewart, Head of Flight Sciences of Hybrid Air Vehicles.

Location: Lecture Theatre ‘0’, Cambridge University Engineering Department, Trumpington Street, Cambridge CB2 1PZ.

Lecture Synopsis
This lecture will explain exactly what an Airlander is and how it combines elements from traditional airships, fixed wing aircraft, hovercraft and helicopters.  David Stewart will talk about each of the major engineering sections, aerodynamics, propulsion, materials, etc. and give an insight into some of the market opportunities that are seen for Airlanders.  David will also talk about the development of the Airlander 10 and the progress on returning the vehicle to flight and finally a brief summary of a TSB funded project that is currently being worked on.
